Playing with code
June 14, 2008
Spending this morning trying to unlock the wonders of CSS. I’m trying to create a better look for this website than the template provided by WordPress. Of course, I have no experience whatsoever with CSS, but what the heck, that won’t stop the experimentation.
I like the overall look and feel of this page, and especially the header, but the all-caps title screams way too loud & I can’t change that. Sorry, I’ll do what I can to turn down the volume.
Update Sun. a.m.: looks like I’ve run into the limits of “WordPress.com” vs. do-it-yourself hosting via “WordPress.org.” More investigation required.
Update Fri. a.m.: well, we tossed the whole thing and started over. Hope everyone likes the new look when it’s done.

Your input is more than welcome . . .

[My note: Here's the questioning that started it all!]: Can you upload or customize themes? And what would you like the design to do? There are dozens, perhaps hundreds of WP themes - I’m sure we can find something close to what you’d like.
Back in June, I was definitely frustrated by this difference between “WP.com” (host your blog, limited ability to muck around) and “WP.org” (lots of customization available but you need to host yourself). You couldn’t upload a theme at WP.com nor change the basic CSS of one you chose. You could write one in DW (or choose one found elsewhere) and import it but you needed a working command of the specific commands WP uses to manage the blogs. I wondered if there were freebies that conform to WP.com’s requirements.
But really . . . why stop there? Now I have a full-blown wp.org install and a whole lot more. Thanks, Kevin, and everyone else who helped make it possible.
